News and insights
Customized catalysts: The core engine for the green transformation of the petrochemical industry
The petrochemical industry is a vital pillar of the global economy (contributing approximately 7% to GDP), supporting the production of over 6 million industrial products such as plastics and fibers. However, it also faces environmental challenges including high energy consumption (accounting for 12% of industrial energy use) and significant carbon emissions (about 10% of global emissions). With policies such as the EU's "Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism" (CBAM) and China's "dual carbon" goals exerting pressure, and the growing demand from consumers for green products, customized catalysts have become the key to resolving the industry's predicament by precisely regulating chemical reactions, achieving a balance between energy efficiency and environmental protection goals. I. The Core Value of Customized Catalysts Catalysts are the "conductors" of petrochemical reactions. By reducing the activation energy of reactions by up to 50%, they lower the reaction temperature by 100200℃ and decrease the pressure by 30%50%, directly cutting energy costs. At the same time, they enhance reaction selectivity and reduce byproducts, increasing the yield of target products by 15%40%. Customized catalysts can be tailored to the specific process requirements of enterprises, achieving performance optimization that fits like a glove, and have become the core tools for petrochemical companies to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and cut carbon emissions. 2. Development Models of Custom Catalysts The development of Drag custom catalysts needs to be combined with the enterprise's demands and technical advantages. There are mainly four models:oint development, custom design, customized production, manufacturing consignment. 3.Sustainable Benefits of Customized Catalysts The green value of Drag customized catalysts has been verified through practice. 4. Future Trends: Intelligence and CrossBorder Integration In the future, custom catalysts will develop towards intelligence and biocatalysis. At the same time, crossindustry collaboration (such as the transfer of photovoltaic silver paste technology to petrochemical hydrogenation reactions) and service model innovation (such as "paying by output" to bind customer benefits) will further promote their widespread adoption. Customized catalysts are not only a tool for process optimization, but will also become "molecularlevel sustainable solutions", driving the petrochemical industry to transition from a "linear economy" to a "netzero carbon circular system". Every innovation in catalytic active sites is contributing to drawing a cleaner future for human civilization.
The main classifications of catalysts
Catalysts are diverse and can be classified by state into liquid and solid catalysts; by the phase state of the reaction system into homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Homogeneous catalysts include acids, bases, soluble transition metal compounds and peroxide catalysts. Heterogeneous catalysts include solid acid catalysts, organic base catalysts, metal catalysts, metal oxide catalysts, complex catalysts, rare earth catalysts, molecular sieve catalysts, biological catalysts, and nanocatalysts. They can also be categorized by reaction type into polymerization, polycondensation, esterification, acetalization, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, oxidation, reduction, alkylation, isomerization, etc. catalysts. According to their role, they can be further divided into main catalysts and cocatalysts. Homogeneous catalysis refers to a reaction where the catalyst and reactants are in the same phase without a phase boundary. The catalysts that can perform homogeneous catalysis are called homogeneous catalysts. Homogeneous catalysts include liquid acid and base catalysts, solid acid and base catalysts such as zeolites, and soluble transition metal compounds (salts and complexes). Homogeneous catalysts act independently as molecules or ions, with uniform active centers, and exhibit high activity and selectivity. Multiphase Catalysis A multiphase catalyst, also known as a heterogeneous catalyst, is used in reactions involving different phases (Phases), meaning that it is in a different state from the reactants it catalyzes. For example, in the production of margarine, through solid nickel (the catalyst), unsaturated vegetable oil and hydrogen can be converted into saturated fats. Solid nickel is a multiphase catalyst, and the reactants it catalyzes are liquid (vegetable oil) and gaseous (hydrogen). A simple nonhomogeneous catalytic reaction involves the adsorption of reactants on the surface of the catalyst, the breaking of bonds within the reactants leading to the formation of new bonds, but due to the weak bonds between the products and the catalyst, the products detach from the reaction site, etc. It is now known that many catalyst surfaces have different structures for adsorption and reactions. Biocatalysis Enzymes are biological catalysts. They are organic substances (mostly proteins, but a small amount of RNA also has biocatalytic functions) produced by plants, animals and microorganisms. They are commonly known as enzymes. The catalytic action of enzymes is also selective. For example, when starch is catalyzed by enzymes, it is hydrolyzed into dextrin and maltose. Protease catalyzes the hydrolysis of proteins into peptides, etc. Living organisms use them to accelerate chemical reactions within the body. Without enzymes, many chemical reactions in the body would proceed very slowly and it would be difficult to sustain life. At a temperature of approximately 37℃ (the body temperature), the working state of enzymes is optimal. If the temperature is higher than 50℃ or 60℃, the enzymes will be destroyed and no longer be able to function. Therefore, enzymebased laundry detergents for removing stains from clothes are most effective when used at low temperatures. Enzymes have significant importance in physiology, medicine, agriculture, industry, etc. Currently, the application of enzyme preparations is becoming increasingly widespread.
